Gynaecological Oncology Radiation Oncology special interest group webinar (GOROC)
Topic: Management of challenging IVA cervical cancers: brachytherapy and external beam solutions to optimize outcomes The lecture will focus on a difficult presentation in cervical cancer, namely the management of tumors that invade the bladder and rectum. We will review the process of diagnosis and management of acute symptoms related to bladder and bowel invasion as well as discuss the role of imaging in this diagnosis. Techniques for management with external beam and brachy therapy will be discussed with pros and cons of each approach for boosting extensive disease. Finally we will review expected outcomes and potential next steps in development of therapy for advanced cervical cancers. Key learning points: • Expected outcomes for stage IVA cervical cancers • Brachytherapy approaches for stage IVA cervical cancer • External beam approaches for boosting IVA cervical cancers Meet our guest speaker: Ann Klopp, MD, PhD is a Professor, Director of Radiation Oncology Gynecological Services and Center Medical Director, COVID Vaccine Clinic at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Klopp’s research and clinical practice focus on the use of advanced radiation techniques to reduce toxicity and improve outcomes for women with gynecologic cancers receiving radiation therapy. She leads a research protocols aimed at improving outcomes for women with cervical cancer, including investigating the impact of real-time MRI guidance to guide the position of brachytherapy applicators and evaluating a combination of HPV directed vaccine with radiation therapy. In addition, she is a physician-scientist investigating the effects of the tumor microenvironment on the biology of gynecologic cancers, including the tumor and gut microbiome.
